In Kauai we have a small town that traffic really sucks around 2-5 pm. There is not a very good bypass and as a result going into town sucks. The county is building a multimillion dollar bike path and I though it would be cool if the county invested in some community bikes with special stalls all around town. I know idiots would steal bikes but I think the community could try and reduce this by watching the bikes and painting them in highly conspicuous colors. I am not talking about really expensive bikes either, just 1 speed cruisers with a basket. Eventua;;y I think people would stop stealing them because there would be no need to. Any thoughts?

I think Portland does that. Theres are yellow. They are always unlocked. If you see one you can jump on and ride it. Then just leave it out, and someone can jump on and ride it. Dont know if they do it anymore.

Yeah but crappy bikes still last a while. Our county spends 10s of millions of dollars on crap. They built a small bridge that cost 4.2 millions! I am talking about a small 2 lane 10 foot bridge that goes over a small stream! Why not spend a few grand to see if it helps the bad traffic?

Great idea. They should let some bike shop sponsor the bikes in exchange for providing a set number of hours or dollars worth of maintenance.

Austin has a bunch of bicks(donated or police recovery) painted jellow all over town. Anyone can ride the bikes and leave them outside for someone else to ride.
