"Paleontology, University of California, Riverside. " Are you doing grad program? What specific area or paleontology are you studying? This is one of those things I could be happy studying if I had time.

Yeah, I've just started an MS. My advisor does a lot of Evolutionary Paleoecology, and I'm probably going to be working on the late Devonian mass extinction. Navin-Riverside is a crappy town to be sure, and it bums me out to no end that the Univeristy here has such a good Paleo program. Greg

Hey jeseda, what are you focusing on? Seems we're living parallel lives... when were you in Thailand?

I'm using the Varieties of Capitalism framework to explain variation among economic institutions in developing countries. How about you? I spent the last 3 summers there for language training and pre-dissertation research. I also lived there for a year in high-school. should be there and Malaysia for most of next year working on the Dissertation. (and some Muay Thai hopefully).

I'm studying alternatives to (mainstream) sustainable development of the "South". Kind of post-development theory, or "progressive socio-political change" through social movements and civic engagement/social capacity. I was in Thailand 02-03 (8 months) for Muay Thai. I will be back in September for a year, for work this time, hopefully with an NGO. I do a lot of work with the Burmese community here in Ottawa, and would like to potentially keep doing that over there. If you are familiar with any community/social development NGOs (is LDI still around?) feel free to share... It seems we're both working on development but from different ends ;)

Octavius, yeah, that's funny. My original dissertation topic was the impact of political institutionson on the capacities of producers to respond to the challenges posed by international labor and environmental standards...such as ISO 14000 & SA8000. Give me a hollar in Sept & we can grab a beer, I should be in Bangkok by then. joel@worldflux.com

"Give me a hollar in Sept & we can grab a beer, I should be in Bangkok by then." Absolutely, though hopefully I'll only be stopping by Bangkok on my way north... Good luck with the dissertation!
