What are the top 5 most venomous snakes? Which snakes combine both types of venom? The kind that paralyze you and the kind that lead you to your death?

I thought the Australian Taupin (sp?) is the most poisonous land snake. The black mamba ranks up there too.

I dont know about the most venomous , but I've come across plenty of snakes while camping/hiking in Australia. Its always best to just get the fuck out of their way. The scariest situation was taking a leak in bundjalung national park (northern NSW) and turning around mid stream to realise I was very close to a death adder. I ended up with piss all down my legs.

The Crocodile Hunter said the the "Fear" Snake is number 1. Supposedly venom is so strong it can kill 150 men from 1 drop, or something like that.

He also said some Austrailian sea snake was no 2, and the Taipan was no 3.

Tiger snake and Mamba were on the top 10.

"Taipan"! THAT'S how to spell it! I always screw that up. Snakes apart, speaking of most poisonous animals in the world, not only is the most poisonous snake in Australia, but also the most poisonous spider in the world(Funnel-web Spider). Is there any GOOD reason to visit that former penal colony?

Taken from http://www.discoverymagazine.com/digger/d00dd/d0010dd.html: he prize for "The World's Most Venomous Snake" goes to the inland taipan of Australia. But the top prize, "The World Most Venomous Animal," should go to the box jellyfish, which is found in the waters around Asia and Australia. Once again - Australia. you'd think the jungles of Africa would have these distinctions, but no.

Last time I checked, it was definately the Inland Taipan being the most venemous snake in the world, in terms of lethality of it's venom. Other breeds of snake however were more deadly - as in being aggressive and causing the most deaths in a year. I thought that title went to the King Cobra but according to Guiness Online it is the Carpet Viper. Of course the fact that these snakes are mainly attacking people in third world countries may have something to do with it.

"Australia has 9 of the 10 deadliest snakes in the world including all the top 5... " Arguable. The report on whcih that was based was done by Australian researches comparing a very limited number of factors. Saw scaled vipers kill far, far more people in India and Africa than all Aussie snakes combined. Same for russel's vipers, same for Indian cobras, and the bothrops vipers in S. America. If you're comparing only a certain type of toxicity, then you can say Aussie snakes are potentially the deadliest, but when you take other factors into consideration, the picture changes.

With all due respect to Irwin's list, the venomdoc link I posted above is a far more rigorous study. BTW, whatever venom/bite parameter you look at in snakes, no snake even holds a candle to the box jelly.
