Yeah, they have incredibly nasty venom. Cone snails are pretty bad, too.

We should have Kirik put up some kind of subforum related to herpetology for threads like this.

Never even heard of a Taipan. Overall, that seems to be the most venemous.

When the CIA wanted to do away with someone they used Saxitoxin, which is derived from tissues of butter clams.

from an evolutionary standpoint, you'd wonder why poisonous creatures aren't more common, or more species developed lethal poisons, as it seems to be a really effective way to kill prey or predators.

actually, they should have a poison animal championship. blue ring octopus vs. sea snake would be cool. or box jelly vs. stone fish.

Trust - yep sure more people may have been killed by them.. that's cos next to no people live in the deserts of Australia where most of these snakes are found. There are the red-belly black snake and the brown that hang around sugar-cane fields... but again... we don't have the billion-odd people that india / SE Asia has.

The animal with the overall deadliest poision is the Golden Arrow Frog (a type of Poison Dart Frog).

When looking at snakes, the Inland Taipan (Fierce Snake) has the "most lethal" poison.  But they are not very aggressive snakes.  In fact, none of the Taipans or Tiger Snakes are all that aggressive.

If you want to replace the word "deadliest" snake with "Most Dangerous" you'd have to go with the Black Mamba.  Venom-wise it is in the top 10, but it is by far the most aggressive snake on the planet and it is THE FASTEST snake on the planet.  If you ask herpetologists which snake they'd least like to mess with, 9 times outta 10 they'll say the Black Mamba.

Black Mamba is considered the most dangerous to handle but I have heard that the Cape Cobra is very aggressive also. The 2 step from se asia referred to the krait (I believe). The interesting thing about the krait is that even with antivenom 50% of the people die.
