Could someone tell me about Ed Parker's style of Kenpo and its effectiveness for practical self defense situations? I would greatly appreciate it. -Rob

i trained in kenpo for 26 yrs and owned my own schools for 15. i like ed parker but not thrilled with ed parker schools usually. some schools are different than others. the parker schools seem to be too self defense technique oriented. not enough sparring and not enough contact work. many parker school students have poor fundamentals. there are guys like frank trejo, rodarte, that are for real. i like the kenpo theories that parker expouses. like the system approach. i had a gal that failed her brown belt test with me because she wouldnt spar. so she went to parker school and got promoted. she couldnt fight to save her life but got many promotions to very high rank in spite of this. i have found that you have to kiss a lot of ass and bring in $$ to get promoted to the highest rankings.

I have heard that some kenpo schools do emphasize full contact sparring.

One cool thing about Kenpo is the names that they give their techniques. Eagle of justice. Double swords of flying fists of fury. Corpulent vengeance. It's hella cool.

I saw a old documentary where part of the black belt test is to do 1000 front snap kicks as fast as possible in front of the full length studio mirror while the kumite song from bloodsport plays on continuos loop in the background. Is this true or just a myth like james mitose or was it just a computer generated image like reese witherspoon?

I see kenpo as more of an "ambush" or first three seconds martial art. It works great with the element of surprise, but for face offs...I go with MMA. -R

yes, the technique names are fun: darkness, over the horizon, dance of the mongoose, dancer, dance of death, it goes on and on. the names generally give hints about the techniques use or application.

I have my black belt in Parker Kenpo. Lots of fun. I don't do it anymore though, I train BJJ/MMA but it's not that bad of an art as far as TMA's go. In the tradition of Kenpo and to follow Sam Pie's instructor's lead, I will start my own Kenpo style and make myself Grandmaster!

My striking coach has a 6th degree black belt in kenpo, we do plenty of sparring but he also has a background in JKD and Muay Thai. He explained that kenpo's basically for getting sucker punched and once your in the mix you would use more of the mma style of fighting.
