For those of you who want to come to Japan for more than just touristy holiday, here is a good site that lays it out from the first to the last step: http://thejapanfaq.cjb.net/ A well written piece about understanding Japanese people: http://www.thejapanfaq.com/FAQ-Primer.html A bit on teaching English (Bit general though, but good for a first start. I'd suggest reading forums of foreigners in Japan for more insight): http://www.thejapanfaq.com/FAQ-EFL.html

there is a lot of good information in those FAQS but there is also more than a few sweeping generalizations. Japanese may have a group mentality and the themes mentioned are generally strong in Japanese society but people are still individuals and you can't simplify those views into a single way of thinking. Even the way something like "uchi-soto" is implemented in society varies considerably from person to person. I think one of the key points to surviving as a foreigner in a very different culture is to first actually understand your own culture. Its amazing how often people suffer the negative side of culture shock from things that also exist back in there own country. When you are foreigner you tend to be sensitive to cultural differences, as a native people tend to be oblivious. an example can be seen in the "the "Nihonjinron and Kokusaika - "We Japanese" and Internationalization" section of the people FAQ. What is written holds true for Japan but it is also true for just about every other country too.
