I love both of my kimbers. Have the CDP with the 3" barrel and the TLE/RL with the 5" barrel. Best handguns I have shot IMHO.

If you get a good Kimber, it'll be one of if not the best gun you'll ever own. The problem is, their series II pistols seemed to be kind of hit and miss. At teh gun shop I work at, we've sold 6 series II kimbers with the external extractors, and had to ship 4 back to Kimber for repair as they wouldn't funciton properly. Note: the only guns that seem to have a lot of problems are the series II guns WITH the external extractor. Also, in 2006 Kimber discontinued teh use of external extractors to deal with this problem, so they should be pretty much good to go if you get a new one.

Jerry B, can you carry that TLE on duty? Wouldn't think so, just curious. Kimbers are top quality. I doubt that in a side by side comparison there would be no difference in any respect, from a Ed Brown or les Baer costing twice as much. I had one in layaway, one of the first ones(I think they had just that one model then), and the store was burglarized and i used my credit for something else(a year or so after that I was buying ammo, the guy said they found it on some kid in Detroit in a school). A few years later I got a used Springfield stainless ("loaded"?,it was the one the regional fbi SWAT guys used). It was my favorite, even more than my Bushmaster or 22/45. Only handgun I ever fired that the point of impact was dead on with the sights. Kind of a pain in the ass to strip after being spoiled by a glock (I could never get the slide release out without leaving a circular scratch on the frame, not to mention the time the barrel link was out of place when I reassembled it). I like the idea of having 12-17 rounds on tap and a striker firing action, but there's just no comparison to a good fullsize 1911 in .45, the handling and especially the trigger(travel, break, incredibly short trigger reset). Damn I miss my .45

shovelhook - I've never done the comparison, but I've heard there is a significant difference.

Shovelhook, I carry my full size TLE/RL on duty. Only have 8+1 on tap, but I have 4 x-tra mags just in case. The trigger is just so much nicer than all the other handguns I have shot.

That's great that you get to use what works best for you, it's too bad a lot of departments don't allow use of SA's for those who prefer them. BTW, I never really cared for the grappling side of MMA till I saw your crucifix on Nick Sanzo in UFC 12, that was just beautiful, and was the start of my interest in submission fighting.

sreiter when you say it gets a little finicky when it's dirty, what do you mean? Failure to fully chamber a cartridge, failure to fully extract a casing, etc? cheers

ttt.

I'm thinking of getting the Ultra Carry II or the Ultra CDP II.

What is the difference between the two?

krept - mostly failure to return to battery - funny thing is it didnt happen until i had the first 1000 through it - had it worked on by 4 or 5 different smiths including the factory - anyway - i have to give the slide a little nig with my thumb to get it into full battery - it also helps if i place a little more oil on the ejection port hood and tip of barrel after 150 - 200 rounds
