so i was sitting here one night working on homework and i happened to look over at my mice, frenchi and lyza. lyza was running like a mad woman on her wheel, flipping herself over because she was running so fast. and frenchi was chasing her tail and biting. now, is the common occurance among mice or is my mouse suffering from lack of oxygen at birth? it's actually quite funny and she does it all the time now..

I've heard some rats develop obsessive compulsive tendencies and carry their tails around in their mouths.

and to think there are people that think animals have no cognition... isn't the stuff they do pretty crazy?

Well, it's been pretty well documented that animals as "dumb" as mice develop distinctive personalities (some brave, some shy, some friendly, some surly, etc.) so it's not surprising at all.

i know all of that.. it's just remarkable for people to still think that animals don't feel anything.. frenchi is a complete spaz (the one that chases her tail and bites it).. lyza is completely cuddly and loves to be held.. do you have any pets fg?

I've got two rats. Veronica is pretty even-tempered and pretty friendly. She loves to sit on my lap and just be pet. Betty acts like I'm trying to murder her every time I handle her and acts appropriately, either lashing out with deadly force or clinging to the bars of the cage for dear life like Drew Barrymore in that scene in the Poltergeist. When she's in a good mood, she'll give me some kisses but that's once in a blue moon.

haha.. that's funny.. frenchi freaks when i pick her up and ends up dragging the wheel out of the cage with her.. not to mention how she runs from either side of the cage.. you'd think i was going to kill her... veronica sounds like lyza, which is funny.. are they the larger rats or mid-size? i know they come in various sizes because i was looking at them when i got these guys..

Veronica's about the size of a small kitten. Betty is pretty small (she was almost mouse-sized when I got her but she's grown a bit).

wow.. yeah i've just got fancy white mice and they're tiny.. when i got them they were babies and they've definitely grown.. they're sweet though.. i don't think they understand though that when my cat is sitting there stalking them while they're in their ball or cage that he doesn't want to play.. they like look at him and are like hey whats up.. i guess that's the naivete that comes with being penned up

I think Betty was pretty much a pup when I got her (you can tell because rat pups have larger upper body muscles but as they get older, they develop into a pear shape). BTW - if you ever get rats, DO NOT MIX RATS AND MICE. Some people try to do this for some insane reason and it usually ends badly even if initially, they seem to get along. Rats hunt mice in the wild. It's even a bad idea to keep rats and mice in the same room - the smell of rats stresses mice out (for obvious reasons).

lol @ pear shape.. and i kind of figured from some of the reading and just common sense that it would be a bad idea to mix the two, especially since they're known to eat their own dead, so why not eat each other?

The "eating their own dead" thing is fairly common in small animals. It's actually a defense mechanism to keep predators away. If they can't move the dead body away from their colony, they will eat it, lest the smell of the body attract bigger (carnivorous) critters.

Had a cool rat named Oggy (named after the OG).  He was really affectionate and loved to be held and carreid around.

I got a small femal ferret.  She is way cool.  I let her out in the evenings to run around the house while I watch tv (the dogs followed her around).  She looked like she needed a companion so I got a second ferret, a male one eye albino.  Now I have two ferrets running around.  They are pretty cool pets... :)

You know they're happy when they're jumping up and down "dooking" all over the place...

oh yes.. that is for sure.. i've also noticed now that Lyza will chew on Frenchi's tail while Frenchi is chewing on Frenchi's tail. It's all a vicious cycle!

MM - do your mice more or less get along all the time? I'm kinda curious because rats occasionally scuffle to establish dominance. It can get kinda noisy at times.

Yeah mice pretty much get on.  Though if they get over crowded or short on food they will eat each other.

every now and then i hear a couple of squeeks but it's usually frenchi just being a bully though she's the more moronic of the two.. they curl up and sleep together ALL of the time and they freak when one is missing (like when i have one out and i haven't picked the other one up yet).. the loudest thing about them is their wheel when it needs peanut butter or when it's laying on the bottom of their cage because they bunched up all of their bedding to one side.. they're crazy but i love them..

so an update on the mouse situation: i now have 5! i bought two more and the kid threw in a third because she was all alone. the original two, frenchi and lyza, are doing okay with them though they occasionaly ko the others every now and then. guess they just gotta keep them bitches in line. the news are cute though. 2 are black and white and the other is brown and white. their names are mooey, mocha, and pschizo (she really is).

Glad to hear your mice have more company. How old are they now?
