Hi Chris, I was wondering technically what is the best escape if you are playing half guard and the oppenant on top catchs the kimura on the arm that should be underhooking??

Well I have a great escape HOWEVER it didn't work as planned against Takase. HE didn't catch the Kimura but he did set it up tighter than I would have liked. Put in your hook on the same side your arm is in so that you are in butterfly 1/2 guard. Put your free hand on his hip and at the same time lift with your hook, push him up with your hand, and quickly hip escape out to the opposite side he is attacking and you can easily take his back. I do it ALL THE TIME butonce it didn't work and it sucked.

Hi Chris, Thanks for the advice and it definatly works. I think also it is the best way to escape. Maybe its not 100% but it has to be like 90%. and your the best!!

this thread confuses me. I am using the half-guard a lot. I tended to get stuck in it a lot, so I've started to try to learn good sweeps and such from it. (reading Bravos book righ tnow too.. his style fits me well so far) So if my left side is locked up in 1/2 guard (I have his R leg, and my L arm is underhooked/ around his back) My opponent is trying to kimura my R arm.. That doesn't sound like what is beng described above. What should I do in my senario, if it IS different from the above. (Damn pics make things so much easier when you're still a noob. lol :P ) Thanks to anyone that actually answers!

"So if my left side is locked up in 1/2 guard (I have his R leg, and my L arm is underhooked/ around his back) My opponent is trying to kimura my R arm.. "

i think the escape described is if the opponent is trying to kimura your LEFT arm.  if he is going after your Right arm, he is GIVING you his back...  i suggest, you grab your own belt/shorts with your Right hand and take his back.

if you're working your 1/2 guard on your opp's Right leg, he SHOULD try and take your Left arm, NOT your right.  the escape described by Chris should work in that case.  if he's trying for your Right arm (with his own Right leg trapped), he's in a bad position, and you should take his back

thanks FarEastGrappler.. I'll see what happens now. Nobody has tried it on me yet for me to try this out. Thanks for the input and I'll see tonight, hopefully, if it was that simple. (it didn't seem at the time that I'd be able to take his back like that.. but maybe I was just too wroried about the kimura? I'm a noob, so I dunno.. lol
