Justin - no thanks. Local junior college is a major source in Vet Techs. We're swimming in them right now, and for cheap.

Question about Spay/Neuter. I can agree with the practice as a means to help control pet populations, but when/how/why did it become vogue for Veternarians to sling it as a form of preventive care?

Smiley - Population is the #1 reason. Killing animals for convenience reasons is terrible. But it also helps the spread of disease, among a number of reasons.

Gravy - Be careful. Stop taking your puppy on walks today, as well as trips to the park. Get your puppy to a vet and get vaccinated ASAP. Parvo is on the rpwl ths time of year, and can lay dormant in the dirt for up to 9 months. Parvo usually ends in the death of the puppy. Get yours in to the vet and tested as soon as possible. If positive, the puppy might not only die, but it'll need to be hospitalized, and that goes for $100 a day, from anywhere up to 14 days. Most times they die while in the hospital. One of the signs of Parvo is loose stool, if there is blood in it as well, your puppy is in danger. Schedule an appointment, they run up to 70 bucks and they go 4 times, 3-4 weeks apart. Much cheaper than 1600 and the dog dieing anyway.

Stephen - Not in my face, no. Thank god. The smell is terrible, and distinct. Nasty shit (ha!). I use a rubber glove and go into the bum, as opposed to squeezing it out.

As I said before, I can live with its use as a form of population control. But, I'm seeing a growing trend in its use as preventative care, which of course, is utter garbage. Just the other day I was watching a program on Animal Planet, one of the Veternarians was doing mobile spay/neuter in NY(I think). She was suggesting that dogs/cats be sterilized by like 6 months or thereabout, citing the reason that it will help prevent reproductive cancers and help the animals lead a happier life. Are Vets really trying to use propoganda for profit? lol

I thought I menioned this somewhere, guess not. It is necessary to spay a feline before the first heat cycle (8-9 months). It will cause tumor growth when the cat becomes older. We recommend at 6 months to get the spay.

"It is necessary to spay a feline before the first heat cycle (8-9 months). It will cause tumor growth when the cat becomes older." LOL. Source? Although this is more complex than any single issue(having more to do with unsound breeding, feeding, and general care), to say that a animals should be sterilized before they're sexually mature, because otherwise they will get sick or die is ridiculous. Animals, whether domestic or wild have survived for a lot longer than Veterinary medicine has been around.
