I'm planning to apply for entrance to an MBA program in the fall of 2007. I take the GMAT this Friday, and am hoping to do well. I'm 27, and I have about 6 years experience in taxes and investments, as well as a 3.5 gpa with a finance BS. Has anyone here gone to a top 20 program? Any insights as to the process? Any pros/cons regarding your school?

Indeed I have. It makes the most sense for me to do a CFA after I complete an MBA program, however.

Bill Brasky: How did you prep for your GMAT? I'm thinking about taking it in the next couple of years and will probably start preparing soon. I've got some skills to make up, for sure.

If you're totally lost as far as basic math (don't feel bad - most people don't use algebra and geometry at all after highschool), GMAT strategy, and the sentence structure/grammar basics you should take a class. Other than that I recommend doing every problem in the GMAT Official Guide, editions 10 and 11. Every problem. Then, go back and re-do all the questions you got wrong. But the first thing to do is go to mba.com and download the free test simulation software and take a full length exam, with essays. That will tell you exactly what you need to work on. For specific sections you need certain stratgies. For example, to prep for reading comprehension it's a good idea to read really complex material. My job helped me prep for that because I was constantly reading US income tax code. Let me know if you have any other questions. I'm always down to help an OGer. P.S., my final score was 750 (99% overall, 99% verbal and 86% math). You can "beat" the GMAT, you just have to work your ass off.

I scored at 730 and only studied a week. I figured out the test is knowing how to take the test. It doesn't take abnormally high intelligence or anything. Also, if you use a prep book like Kaplan, etc, be aware it will feed you lower scores to entice you into taking the class. I freaked out a bit before I figured that out.

kbhat: What was your score breakdown? What did you figure out about how to take the test? Be specific.

Bill Brasky: That's a hell of a score! Thanks for the advice. Math is the part I'm concerned with, since I had a difficult time passing basic algebra in college. A class might definitely be in order.
