My friend works at a gun store and will give this bolt action Savage in .243 for almost nothing. Up to what size game would this round be effective on?

Yeah, I wanted it for a Varmint rifle but wasn't sure of it's effectiveness on other game.

It'll take a deer down, but I wouldn't use it for anything bigger.

With 85+ grain premium bullets, it is suitable for deer. With lighter bullets, coyotes down to woodchucks. It's a versatile round but not an elk rifle or a 25-06, 260 Remington or something like that.

With strict discipline, it could be used on hogs. I would recommend head shots only from a 90 degree angle to the base of the ear.
