Serious question: France is a first-world, european country, strong football tradition, big capital city (Paris), plenty of world-class players....where is the French version of Real Madrid, or Juventus? Why is the french league kind of second-tier?

Try telling Real Madrid that Lyon is a second-tier team. Two years straight they were shut out in the Champions League by them. That plus 5 straight domestic titles and players like Fred and Juninho = a top team. as for the rest of Ligue 1, I'm not sure why they haven't caught up to the other top leagues in Europe. I see no reason why teams like Marseille or PSG shouldn't be more of a threat to Lyon

until the World Cup 98 Football was second string in France to Rugby Union. They put in a shit load of development into academies and stuff, and it paid off.

France has had some kick ass teams like psg in the early 90s and the great marseille teams and now lyon. They export their talent now. But i find the french league one of the most exciting soccer leagues to watch. Skill of the italian and spanish leagues without too much diving, and the quick pace and hard tackling of the british leagues.
