I've always been intrigued by this book, although I've never read it. Is it worth reading? I think I might see the movie today. It seems like one of those books that ranks at the top of a lot of people's "favorites."

i read it last year. it's kind of like lord of the rings in that its kind of a grand-daddy of the genre. if i hadn't read a bunch of sci-fi as a kid, i would've liked/appreciated it more. good though...

It's a good read but it may not be for everyone. It's a bit different from what people think of when they think "sci-fi". Plus, the hero is so Machiavellian that it may be difficult to empathize with him. The first three books are good...then the rest start to go loopy. There are a lot of references to Islam in the book. I didn't realize it when I first read it since I was in high-school and was completely ignorant about Islam so it was kind of weird going back to the books as an adult and seeing all the references.

FG2002 is correct, after te first three books they were pot boilers, kind of like Tarzan and John Carter. Good enough reads but not as good as the originals.

The first book is great. Read the rest at your own risk. The son finished the final book and it is a fucking mess.

Herbert's son should have been shot before he ruined his father's work. P.S. I love the whole Dune series.

BTW - Have any Dune fans here played the Avalon Hill board game "Dune"? I've never played but reading descriptions of the game piqued my interest. Sort of like "Diplomacy" but with spice, worms and family atomics.

I'm just so happy that someone on the forum didn't have his interest "peaked". Haven't played the game. Or read the book. Haven't even seen the movie. I'm Dune-deficient.

The board game is out of print and it's hard to get a copy on e-Bay for a reasonable price...but you can make your version because a lot of people have made their own version of the game board, cards, etc. and the rules are available on-line.

Flash, is the boardgame you're talking about based on the movie (graphics, etc)?

There was a boardgame based on the movie put out by Parker Brothers but the game I'm talking about pre-dates the movie and was published by Eon/Avalon-Hill.

I loved the first book. The series itself isn't bad either. Worth the read for books 1-6, imo.

Fantastic book, Dune, one of the classics of the science fiction genre, and classic in general. The Dune Series, however, does not measure up to the first book. I think that with the later books, Herbert's writing talents just were not up to the task of handling the story that he had in his mind.

Herbert's thread through the first three books of the series about a quasi-religious order (the Bene Gesserit) planting religious/mythical ideas in cultures in order to later manipulate the populace has always completely fascinated me.

"Herbert's thread through the first three books of the series about a quasi-religious order (the Bene Gesserit) planting religious/mythical ideas in cultures in order to later manipulate the populace has always completely fascinated me." Yea, and something that, sadly, both Lynch's butcher job of a film and the Sci Fi channel miniseries ignored.
