Iran Celebrates; Saudi Silent; Libya Mourns Saddam's Execution

By Marc Wolfensberger and Abdulla Fardan Dec. 30 (Bloomberg) -- Iran and Kuwait, both attacked by Saddam Hussein, welcomed his execution today, while Libya mourned his death, and the Arab leaders of Egypt, Syria and Saudi Arabia remained mum on the hanging of a former colleague. ``The Iraqi people are the victorious ones,'' Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister Hamid Reza Asefi told the Islamic Republic News Agency, while expressing regrets that his trial only focused on one of his crimes and not the one million killed during the Iran-Iraq War of 1980-88. Libya declared 3- days of mourning and called Hussein a ``prisoner-of-war.''

Alliances change. I suppose the US looked silly after WWII for teaming with Uncle Joe?

Not a good analogy. The US didn't build up Uncle Joe only to later turn on him.

"yes actually it did support Stalin the worst mass murder in the history of the world?" First of all LMAO @ even the IDEA of you giving a F@#$ about the people Stalin killed. Your game is politics and idealogy. You have shown time and again on here that civilians dying means nothing unless it is convenient for the side you picked. Secondly the US teamed with Russia to take out Germany and Japan. While Russia's leadership sucked, Japan and Germany were invading and committing horrendous human rights violations on other oountries. Japan especially, needed its ass straightened out. The US NEVER condoned what Stalin did or endorsed him as leader but allied to take out a worse threat to American security and worldwide stability. The alliance with Russia was in the United Sates' best interest which is always a huge factor, as it should be. Eventually we bled them try in the cold war.

HELWIG is so fucking correct that it's scary.

Sadly, his extremely valid points will be lost on hubris who is has succumbed to the 'if America did it, it must be bad' ideology.

Actually, I'm going with Saloth Sar or Pol Pot for some of you as the worst. Look what Stalin and Hitler had to work with. I mean c'mon, could you imagine what Pol Pot would have done with those capabilities.

If you accept that it's all about who suites your interests at the time, then you also accept that there are really no good guys and bad guys, just competing interests. The US government has and probably will back bad people in pursuit of their interests, just like anyone else. Which is fine, until you forget that and start using BS rhetoric about they are evil and we are good. OTOH if you accept that there are good guys and bad guys, then you have to accept that the US government has abetted evil in its time and you have to try and oppose it doing so again. You can't have it both ways, imo. Either foreign policy and foreign relations it should be amoral, or it should be moral.
