5 people who earned their BJJ black belts in under three years
Unlike a lot of traditional martial arts, where getting a black belt has become somewhat of a business and novelty as opposed to an actual achievement, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu stands out as one of the few remaining disciplines where earning black belt status is still notoriously difficult and well respected among peers. Typically it takes 10 years to achieve this status sometimes even taking a full 20 years depending on the instructor and how often the student trains.
So when you hear someone gained their Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt in under three years you initially would be skeptical of such a feat.
But in the following video, we take a look at five people who legitimately earned their Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belts in under three years of training.
The most obvious person that comes to mind is UFC Hall of Famer BJ Penn, who not only got his belt under three years but also became the first American to take gold at the prestigious World Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Championships in 2000.
But surprisingly he isn’t the number one person on this list. Check out the full list below.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art, combat sports system that focuses on grappling and especially ground fighting. BJJ promotes the concept that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend against a bigger, stronger, heavier assailant by using proper technique, leverage, and most notably, taking the fight to the ground, and then applying joint-locks and chokeholds to defeat the opponent. BJJ training can be used for sport grappling tournaments. However, it can be used in some self-defense situations and does serve its purpose. Sparring (commonly referred to as rolling) and live drilling play a major role in training, and a premium is placed on performance, especially in competition, in relation to progress and ascension through its ranking system.
