Mario Lopez spars Canelo Alvarez and gets WORKED
Mario Lopez, a tv show host and actor most widely known for his role as AC Slater in the 90’s teen sitcom “Saved By The Bell”, posted a clip of himself on social media sparring Mexican boxing megastar Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.
“Shouldn’t have drunk so much.” Lopez captioned his short vid of himself sparring Canelo Alvarez.
On Saved By The Bell, Lopez put his break dancing, wrestling, drumming, and dimples on full display but until now we hadn’t seen much of his boxing ability. While definitely a boxing enthusiast and a more than a competent boxer, it’s obvious that Canelo was just walking him down, defending, and throwing a pot shot here and there for good measure while letting Lopez get most of the work in.
The few shots that Canelo did throw, albeit under total control, looked markedly heavier than Lopez’. Canelo even played a little bit out of a southpaw stance in the beginning of the clip. It was a light spar, but you can easily see that if Canelo decided to turn up the heat even just a little, we may have finally seen AC Slater in a place where he couldn’t be saved by the bell. No Zack Morris ‘Time-Out’s either.
Canelo (W49-L1-D1), whose only loss came at the hands of Floyd Mayweather Jr. was preparing to face Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. at the time this clip was recorded. He went on to soundly defeat Chavez Jr. in a lopsided unanimous decision beating, most likely due to the addition of a dimpled, wrestling, break-dancer to his camp.
Saul “Canelo” Alvarez will meet Gennady “GGG” Golovkin in a middleweight showdown on Saturday, September 16th in Las Vegas in what boxing-purists consider to be the real boxing super fight of 2017.
While Canelo may have the edge on Mario Lopez in a boxing match, AC Slater would definitely win an MMA fight, IMO, if he was allowed to use the same wrestling ability he previously used to defeat Marvin Nedick.
… but we’ll never know.
