When it comes to unarmed martial arts, thanks to the UFC and MMA, we have pretty much figured out what works in reality and what does not. The first UFC proved that BJJ is clearly most effective above all others. But the subsequent ones proved that being well rounded with a blend of wrestling, BJJ, muay thai and boxing as well as sometimes judo is the most effective way to go about it.

Regarding weapon based martial arts though, we really can’t test out the techniques full force the same way we could in the first UFC as it would be too brutal for modern society. So we have to rely on theory.

In this video from YouTube channel ‘Metatron’ they break down the top 10 most effective weapon based martial arts based on both theory and practice with these rare martial arts.

Seen at number 9 on the list surprisingly is Olympic fencing. Much like the narrator makes note of though, there are a lot of problems with Olympic fencing as it is very much sport based nowadays, much like what happens to other Olympic martial arts. Historical fencing is brought up which is much more combat oriented but training in it is hard to come by.

Rounding out the top 3 are Okinawan Kobudo, Kenjutsu which is Japanese swordsmanship, and HEMA in the top spot which stands for Historic European Martial Arts which is growing in popularity worldwide quite rapidly.
