A pioneer of the sport who entered with a background in striking styles such as Karate, Taekwondo and Muay Thai, Bas Rutten famously furiously trained himself up in the art of submission fighting after losing to Ken Shamrock in Pancrase and finished his MMA career with 12 wins by way of submission.

Throughout the video Bas addresses what techniques are more suited to your size in relation to the attacker applying the choke, what to do if the attacker happens to both choke you and lift you up in the air as well as stories he’s heard from police officers in the line of duty.

Sebastiaan “Bas” Rutten ( born 24 February 1965) is a Dutch retired mixed martial artist (MMA)Karate and Taekwondo black belt, and Muay Thai kickboxer. He was a UFC Heavyweight Champion, a three-time King of Pancrase world champion, and finished his career on a 22 fight unbeaten streak (21 wins, 1 draw). In 2015 he was inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame.

After retirement, he has worked as a color commentator in several MMA organizations, including Pride, and has appeared in numerous television shows, movies, and video games. He also coaches MMA and has authored several instructional materials.
