Bruce Lee or Jean-Claude Van Damme – who had the better kicks?

Saturday, April 28, 2018

When comparing martial arts film icons Bruce Lee and Jean-Claude Van Damme, there is no question on who left the bigger mark on the martial arts world. If it wasn’t for Bruce Lee and his documentaries like ‘Enter the Dragon’ (1973), there probably wouldn’t even be a Jean-Claude Van Damme and his epic documentary ‘Bloodsport’ (1988).

However, specifically in terms of kicking ability, the two martial arts were very close in skill and ability and both had some very fast and powerful kicks which we see in the video below.

In the following video, we get to see the kicking-skills of both Lee and Van Damme displayed against each other so we can see for ourselves exactly who had the better kicks.

Both guys came from very different martial arts backgrounds, with Lee coming from Chinese martial arts like Wing Chun and others before branching out and creating his own style/philosophy of Jeet Kune Do which, in many ways, was a precursor to modern MMA.

Van Damme, on the other hand, came from a striking-centered background in Shotokan Karate as well as Taekwondo, plus Muay Thai/vault/kickboxing.

Compared to Bruce Lee, Van Damme actually had some competitive experience as well, holding a legitimate background in competitive karate as well as kickboxing too to some degree.

So, check out the video below and decide for yourself just who had the better kicks – Bruce Lee or Jean-Claude Van Damme.
