How to throw powerful kicks without getting them caught

18Kicking in a fight, whether it be in competition or a self-defense situation, can be a powerful tool that can be used to end the fight quickly. However, when throwing kicks at someone there is always a risk of your leg being caught which can lead to you ending up on your back or being countered. So how can we prevent that from happening?

In the following video from popular martial arts channel ‘fightTIPS,’ Shaun gives us some tips on how to kick more effectively and prevent our legs from being caught and trapped.

Firstly, Shaun explains that throwing a kick to your opponent’s midsection particularly carries the greatest risk of being caught which makes sense as your leg would be in close proximity to your opponent’s arms and well within their reach.

In order to prevent this from happening, you need to set up your body kicks with punching techniques upstairs to bring your opponent’s arms up to defend, then you can blast them to the body.

Quick retraction is also very important to prevent your leg from being caught. Though you may be tempted to dig in with your kick to increase the damage, bringing it back quickly is the smarter move if you don’t want to get countered.

And lastly, Shaun goes the importance of bringing your kick back towards your body after throwing it and not towards the ground. Whether it be a front kick or round kick, bringing it straight down after throwing it makes it more predictable and therefore easier for your opponent to grab.
