Idris Elba training for pro kickboxing match

Idris Elba was named in the Time 100 list of the Most Influential People in the World this year. The four-time Golden Globe Award nominated and five-time Primetime Emmy Award nominated actor is best known for playing drug baron Russell “Stringer” Bell on the HBO series The Wire, Detective John Luther on the BBC One series Luther, and Nelson Mandela in the 2013 biographical film Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom. He also came in #2 in People magazune’s annual Sexiest Man Alive in 2013. And the Londoner is a DJ under the names DJ Big Driis and Big Driis the Londoner.

But that’s not all.

The 43-year-old is starring on his own documentary on the Discovery Channel called Idris Elba: Fighter. According to Deadline, the three-part series will follow the Elba as he undertakes the physically and mentally demanding task of training to become a semi-professional kickboxer — ultimately competing against a seasoned brawler in a no-holds-barred bout.

The reference to no-holds-barred is believed to be publicist hyperbole. The contest in question is believed to be under kickboxing rules, not mixed martial arts, which was known in its earliest years as No Hold Barred.

Idris Elba: Fighter is produced by Shine North and Elba’s company Green Door Pictures, and is shot on location in the UK, Cuba, Japan, South Africa and Thailand. The series is expected to be released in early 2017.

“It has been a lifelong ambition of mine to fight professionally,” said Elba. “Entering the ring to further test myself as a human being is a challenge I have been looking to take on for quite some time.”

The report notes that Elba does have some experience in the field, having done fitness kickboxing in his 20s. It’s not the same.

However, the renaissance man has been charting his progress via Instagram, where he indicates the first fight may have already taken place. He looks decent for a 43 year old who never fought, and is reportedly taking his training seriously.
