Some martial arts devotees are given to pontificating that “my martial art is all about the development of elevated character (like mine).” Combat sports like wrestling also develop character, although most of the focus is spent on actually developing character, rather than talking about it.

If you are thinking about putting your child into a martial arts program, or a new martial arts program, wrestling will develop a host of valuable qualities like motivation, perseverance, confidence, respect, independence, and much more. And it works – seven of ten UFC champions have their base in Folkstyle wrestling. Beyond that though, it is more important to be a good person than a good fighter, and that is why youth martial arts is so important.
