MASSIVE powerlifter transitioning to MMA - is he the next BIG thing?

Thursday, July 05, 2018

380lb powerlifter Alex Simon, humbly nicknamed 'The God', already has numerous strength-career accolades at the young age of 24, which includes the strongest man title in his native Australia. But now, the MASSIVE powerlifter is setting his sights on the world of combat sports and he has some very high expectations for himself.

According to his official Instagram account,

“[SIGNING ON WITH TEAM BODYFIT AT MIRANDA] HAS GIVEN ME A OPPORTUNITY TO PURSUE MY DREAM SINCE I WAS A YOUNG KID AND THAT IS WHAT I WILL BE DOING NOW OUT OF THIS AMAZING FACILITY AND THAT DREAM IS TO BECOME UFC WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION. I WILL NOW BE PUTTING ALL OF MY TIME AND FOCUS INTO BECOMING THE BEST MMA FIGHTER I CAN BE AND COULDN’T ASK FOR A BETTER PLACE FOR THAT TO HAPPEN. TODAY IS MY 25TH BIRTHDAY AND I HAVE A GOAL WHICH I WILL BE WORKING TOWARDS EVERY SINGLE DAY OF BECOMING HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION OF THE WORLD BEFORE MY 30TH B-DAY IN 5 YEARS TIME. I HAVE THE PERFECT TEAM BEHIND ME NOW TO GET ME TO THE TOP OF THE FIGHT GAME AND I AM EXTREMELY MOTIVATED TO BE CHAMPION, MASSIVE THANKS TO MY TEAM WHO BELIEVE IN ME AND MY GOAL. LET’S DO THIS.”

Well, if his goal is to be a UFC world champion, the big man certainly has his work cut out for him as there isn't even a weight class for him currently and also, at 380lbs, it is unlikely that he can even come close to making the 265lb heavyweight-limit. Furthermore, I'd also reckon he may have a bit of an issue with the USADA testing protocol, for some reason.

In the video below, we see some training footage from the giant Aussie which includes both strength training as well as fight training and we even see some of his amateur fight footage in which he has a serious habit of winning via nasty knockout.

Compared to standard bodybuilders who train simply for aesthetics and hypertrophy, guys like Simon and other powerlifters and strongmen will probably fare much better in MMA as they're going to be crazy strong and have much more functional strength too. Though they still may struggle somewhat with the endurance aspect. Nevertheless, it will definitely be interesting to see how this man progresses in his MMA career, in the super heavyweight division.
