Kempo practitioner takes on MMA fighter – ends brutally

Wednesday, March 15, 2017

In this old school fight video we see what happens when a kempo fighter takes on an MMA fighter and it ends in rather brutal fashion.

Kempo is pretty much an eclectic style of traditional martial arts that is sort of like a blend between Chinese martial arts and Japanese martial arts. Much like many other traditional martial arts though, they are outdated when faced off against a modern MMA fighter.

This fight took place on January 23, 1996 and was one of the opening fights of the ‘MPS 1996: Mr. Strongman SEKAI 1996’ tournament in Minsk, Belarus.

The kempo fighter’s name is Nikolai Yatsuk and it actually looks like he’s wearing running shoes in there and he intelligently makes good use of them initially. He probably wasn’t aware at first of who exactly he was fighting in there.

His opponent, the MMA fighter and kickboxer Igor Vovchanchyn, was truly an elite fighter for his time and a true legend of the sport. His fighting style is very brutal and hard hitting that his opponent Yatsuk finds out the hard way here.

This fight is a complete mismatch between one guy who doesn’t really know how to fight taking on perhaps one of the best fighters in the world at the time.

Though in the kempo fighter’s defense he does land a couple nice low kicks right before he gets brutally knocked out less than 2 minutes in with a huge right hook.

Vovchanchyn would go on to fight two more times that same day, winning the Mr. Strongman tournament. He would also go on to be one of the best fighters in the world for his time, making it all the way to the finals of the epic Pride Open weight Grand Prix some years later.

His opponent, Nikolai Yatsuk would never fighter again and that is probably for the best.
