How to identify and use ANYTHING around you for self-defense

Sunday, November 12, 2017

In a self-defense situation, sometimes using whatever is at your disposal is not only necessary but it can help save your life. This is especially true when confronted with a weapon but also can be true against any type of physical attack.

In this video from BJJ black belt and self-defense expert, Stephan Kesting, he goes over how to use improvised weapons in a self-defense situation as well as how to get into the mindset of always being aware of what you can use if something were to happen.

Interestingly enough, one of the items Kesting goes over is a discarded pillow that he finds lying on the ground. Now ideally, you’d obviously want to have something a little better than a pillow, but like he points out, against a knife-wielding attacker a pillow at least provides some protection which is always better than none at all.

Many of the items Kesting goes over in the video are similar to the pillow whereas they’re not really ideal as a weapon but can be used defensively or to throw at someone in order to create an opportunity to either a) escape (always the number one priority in self-defense) or b) further neutralize your attacker.

The main takeaway from this video, though, is to always be aware of what you can use if a self-defense situation were to ever occur. Like Stephan says in the video, you are not always going to have the perfect improvised weapon like a metal pipe or a 2 by 4, but sometimes using whatever is available can help you defend yourself and escape to safety.
