The 7 most DEVASTATING elbow strikes for self-defense
We have all seen elbow strikes be used effectively in both high-level MMA and Muay Thai, but they can also be a very effective tool in self-defense situations.
In this video from BJJ black belt Stephan Kesting, he goes over the 7 most effective and proven elbow strikes used specifically for self-defense purposes.
Elbow strikes can be used a few different ways, as Stephan goes over in the video, such as either a smashing type elbow or to specifically open up a cut.
In professional fight sports where competitors are tested for diseases, opening up a cut on your opponent is great and can win you the fight but on the street, it’s a little different.
Like Stephan points out, trying to slice someone open on the streets can be risky as you never know if someone has a disease like HIV or hepatitis so it is much better to go for the more ‘clubbing’ type of elbow.
The difference between these two elbows is very subtle and is only a matter of inches. Instead of hitting with the tip of your elbow like you would do to try to cut your opponent, you want to hit them more with the forearm. This is much more likely to knock someone out which is ideal for a real-life self-defense situation.
One of the great things about elbows is they can be used many different ways from all sorts of angles that your opponent won’t expect. They can also be used in a very close range such as on the ground or in a clinch type position.
