Taekwondo vs. Tai Chi in challenge match – someone goes DOWN
For many of us, traditional martial arts were a part of our upbringings growing up and are what initially got us started in martial arts training. Although they often have the best movies (for whatever reason), in reality, they are just not all that effective, either in real life or competition.
In this challenge match, we see what happens when two very different styles of traditional martial arts square off as a Taekwondo player takes on a Tai Chi practitioner and, unlike many of these kinds of style versus style bouts, there is a clear-cut winner in this one.
As previously stated, though traditional martial arts are nowhere near as effective as more ‘modern’ (relatively speaking) arts like Muay Thai, BJJ, or MMA, some are still going to be more effective than others and almost all have some elements or a technique or two that may actually work and be effective in real life.
Taekwondo is one of those such arts where you regularly see some of its techniques employed in high-level MMA such as wheel kicks and the super-powerful spinning back kick.
Tai Chi is, unfortunately, not one of those such arts.
Check out the video below to see who comes out on top – the Taekwondo player or the Tai Chi practitioner.
ABOUT TAI CHI:
Tai chi (taiji), short for T’ai chi ch’üan, or Taijiquan (pinyin: tàijíquán; 太极拳), is an internal Chinese martial art practiced for both its defense training and its health benefits. The term taiji refers to a philosophy of the forces of yin and yang, related to the moves. Though originally conceived as a martial art, it is also typically practiced for a variety of other personal reasons: competitive wrestling in the format of pushing hands (tui shou), demonstration competitions and achieving greater longevity. As a result, a multitude of training forms exist, both traditional and modern, which correspond to those aims with differing emphasis. Some training forms of tàijíquán are especially known for being practiced with relatively slow movements. [Source: Wiki]
