BJJ black belt vs. Knife expert with a real knife – who wins?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is no stranger to taking on people from other martial arts disciplines such as Kickboxing, Karate, Kung Fu, and Ninjitsu, leaving a long-lasting impression on the landscape of martial arts after Royce Gracie’s multiple UFC tournament victories in the early nineties.

But how would Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu fare against a weapon-based martial art?

In the following video BJJ black belt Alex Embry takes on Paul Ingram of Kali Centre – who specializes in the Filipino stick and blade art of Kali (also known as Eskrima).

Typically when training against knives, the rubber training knife is used but as Paul points out it can create a false sense of security.

“When you’re training with a rubber knife, everyone is a hero. But you can’t grab [a bladed knife].”

So in the following video, Paul and Alex decide to train with a live blade to demonstrate the effect it has on training, with Paul acting as the aggressor and Alex having to use his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu skills to neutralize the threat before getting cut.

Warning – it is not recommended you try this yourself, as these are both seasoned professionals in their respective martial arts. Check out the full clip below.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art, combat sports system that focuses on grappling and especially ground fighting. BJJ promotes the concept that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend against a bigger, stronger, heavier assailant by using proper technique, leverage, and most notably, taking the fight to the ground, and then applying joint-locks and chokeholds to defeat the opponent. BJJ training can be used for sport grappling tournaments, mixed martial arts competition as well as self-defense. [Source: Wiki]
