Dana White: Jessica Andrade is ‘a real problem’ for Valentina Shevchenko

UFC women’s flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko is running out of viable contenders, but at the UFC 255 post-fight press conference, president Dana White made the case for Jessica Andrade. In the last 18 months, “Bate Estaca” (Pile Driver) slammed Rose Namajunas to win the strawweight belt, lost her first title defense to Zhang Weili, then lost the rematch to Namajunas via Split Decision, and moved up to flyweight. In her first fight at 125, Andrade TKO’d Katlyn Chookagian with body shots in Round 1, now a title shot could be next.

“Andrade is a very, very good fight for her,” said White. “That’s a tough fight. If you’re gonna go out and be safe the first couple of rounds against somebody like Jennifer, what are you going to do against Andrade? Andrade is gonna bring her a lot of things she’s never seen before. Not to mention the power Andrade has.

“She just knocked a girl out — a really good girl. Like the number two girl in the world with a body shot. She’s a real problem for Shevchenko that she’s gonna have to figure out, and if she does, I think the fight that makes more sense is, [Weili] Zhang will fight here soon, and after Weili fights, maybe you do those two”

“I think that Andrade-Shevchenko is a very fun fight. The thing I love about that fight too is that Shevchenko is at a place in her career now where she needs an opponent that people think actually has a chance at beating her and I think we all know that Andrade does.”

Andrade is clear she is at flyweight for a title shot, but acknowledged it may take a few more fights. At the post-fight press conference, Shevchenko referenced Andrade as a potential opponent. So with White doing the same, it seems likely to happen.

However, Lauren Murphy is not impressed.
