Dana White: With a win on Saturday, Khabib Nurmagomedov is #1 P4P, and on way to GOAT status

As you might have heard, undefeated UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov defends vs. interim champ Justin Gaethje in the main event of UFC 254 on Saturday; note: main card starts at 2:00 p.m. ET. At the pre-fight press conference, UFC president Dana White laid out what’s at stake.

“Khabib is looking down the barrel of not only [being] the greatest to ever do it in this division … if he beats Justin on Saturday, he’s the number one pound for pound fighter in the world, and he’s on his way to GOAT status.

“You have all the ingredients for a massive fight. You have a big superstar and a kid coming off an incredible win over a highly respected fighter and many people believe that Justin has the to beat him. You think you know what these guys are going to do, but when they get in there anything is possible.”

Nurmagomedov was asked if he thinks he might achieve legend status like Mike Tyson or Muhammad Ali.

“I didn’t have this goal,” he replied. “I just want to win every fight. We’ll see in the future because I’m not finished yet. When I retire, I want to retire undisputed, undefeated UFC lightweight champion.”

And Khabib was also asked for the 1,000th time about his father and coach Abdulmanap, who died in July due to complications from COVID-19.

“The most important thing for me is to stay close with your family and friends, because today you’re champion, tomorrow everything can change,” said Nurmagomedov. “I’m so proud of these things because I think I was a good kid for my parents.”

Gaethje too fielded questions.

“I’m not even supposed to be here,” he said. “This was supposed to be Tony Ferguson. I got that opportunity and I took it from him. I’m a performer. I always show up under the lights. That’s what I do. On Saturday I will leave everything, give everything, and be proud of my performance.”

What do you think UG? With a win is Khabib Nurmagomedov the P4P champ? Is he the greatest lightweight of all time? Is he the GOAT?
