Darren Till: Listen to the haters and the trolls

Good! Use your aggressive feelings, boy. Let the hate flow through you.”
-Emperor Palpatine, Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi

“I’ve nurtured every sensation man’s been inspired to have. I cared about what he wanted and I never judged him. Why? Because I never rejected him. In spite of all his imperfections, I’m a fan of man! I’m a humanist. Maybe the last humanist.”
-The devil with skin on him, John Milton, in The Devil’s Advocate

Darren Till spoke recently with Mike Bohn for MMA Junkie and argued that online, like Emperor Palpatine and the devil, fighters shouldn’t avoid hate.

“I think you should listen to the haters and the trolls both ways,” said Till. “I think you should listen to them and let it fuel you. Sometimes I’ve seen trolls and haters say valid things about myself and think, ‘He’s actually quite right. I need to do that. I need to work on that and write it down in my notes.’”

“My advice to anyone, listen, I ain’t no champion yet, but I’m at the highest level possible in MMA, I’m there, I’m on the cusp of it. My advice is to take all the advice, even from the haters, take everything in.

“Take the hate in. Take the advice in, bask in it. Don’t get riled by it and don’t let it affect you mentally and physically. My whole life I never gave a fook. Anyone who’s around me will say, ‘Till really does what he wants and doesn’t give a fook.

“And even more now in fighting and in life in general, I couldn’t give a fook. My advice is to take it all in, bask in the hate, bask in the negativity of comments, bask in the positive, back in everything. Why should you only bask in the positive? Bask in the negative as well, but that’s just me.”

And thus it was that the UG found itself on the side of angels, at last.
