Jon Jones trying to stir up drama vs. Israel Adesanya

Sunday, April 14, 2019

Israel Adesanya captured the interim middleweight championship at UFC 236 on Saturday night, setting up a unification fight vs. division champion Robert Whittaker, tentatively targeted for Australia in September. There is also talk of a superfight vs. light heavyweight champion Jon Jones; however, at the post fight press conference, Adesanya made no bones about the fact he wanted the focus to stay on what he had just done.

“This is about me,” said Adesanya post-fight, as transcribed by Ryan Harkness for MMA Mania. at the post-fight press conference. “This moment right now is all about what me and what me Kelvin did tonight. None of that. I’ll address that at another time. But right now, it’s about me.”

That set Jones to tweeting enthusiastically, some of which were apparently later removed:

•"Just waking up to the morning news, this is about you now bitch."
•"My man had a toe to toe kickboxing match with a short stubby wrestler. There’s only one Jon Jones ladies and gentlemen."
•"Nothing but respect for Kelvin. Dude Almost beat a kickboxer without throwing a single kick."
•"You guys can you believe the hype if you want to. I’ve seen all I had to see."

Jones fights Thiago Santos at UFC 239 on July 6. Santos is a recent arrival from middleweight; Jones has largely cleaned out his own division.
