Khamzat Chimaev vows to smash Kamaru Usman, Israel Adesanya

Former BRAVE CF contender Khamzat Chimaev continued what has every appearance of a historic ascent in the UFC with a quick win at UFC on ESPN+ 36. In his league debut, at middleweight, “Borz” outlanded his opponent 124-2. He wasn’t hit even once in his next two fights, but the pace is accelerating. It took him 68 punches to take out his second UFC opponent, at welterweight. And on Saturday, in a return to middleweight, it took just four punches to end it.

At the post-fight press conference, Chimaev entertained. Many are calling him Khabib 2.0, but Khamzat 1.0 disagrees, noting his stand up striking may be his greatest asset.

“Everybody says, ‘You’re Khabib. Khabib No. 2,’ something like that,’ he said. “But I am Khamzat. I can knock out people, submit the people, smash the people, everything. I have everything.”

Chimaev and opponent Gerald Meerschaert trash talked some before the fight, but “Borz” said it wasn’t personal.

“I’m always angry to smash somebody and knock him out like I did now, but it’s nothing personal, it’s sport,” he said. “You have to talk, you have to take him as he was. When I looked at his eyes … in the cage when I looked at him, he didn’t want to be there. I said that directly.”

UFC president Dana White intends to pit Chimaev vs. Demian Maia in October.

“Yeah, why not? He’s the best ‘jitser’ in MMA. If I stop him, choke him out, I’m the best ‘jitser’ in MMA! We will see. … I am ready for everybody,” said Chimaev. “Like I said to Dana, if you give me Demian Maia, I am ready for him. If you give me Brock Lesnar, I am ready for him, also.”

White may even give Chimaev a fight before Maia in October. Afterall, he’s been hit just twice in the last three fights. And the Chechen-Swede is looking forward, at welterweight champ Kamaru Usman and middleweight champ Israel Adesanya.

“Of course! Why not?” he asked. “I did hard work for that. I’m ready. Both divisions. … If I do my hard work, nobody’s a challenge for me. I’m going to stop both guys.”
