Nurmagomedov apologizes for vaulting fence
UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov endured a gauntlet of verbal attacks and worse leading up to his successful title defense vs. Conor McGregor at UFC 229 on Saturday night. He was on a bus that was attacked by McGregor, injuring four people. Two fighters couldn't fight and strawweight champion Rose Namajunas remains disturbed by the events. Then McGregor insulted Nurmagomedov's father, culture, and much more.
After the fight, in an adrenalized state, he vaulted the fence and confronted a member of McGregor's team. Unfortunately, other members of Nurmagomedov's team then launched a cowardly attack on McGregor.
Nurmagomedov has had his purse withheld by the Nevada Athletic Commission, pending an investigation. At the UFC 229 post-fight press conference, The Eagle apologized.
"He talk about my religion, he talk about my country, he talk about my father, he come to Brooklyn and he broke bus. He almost kill a couple of people. Worry about this. Worry about this s***. Why people talk about I jump over the cage? I don’t understand.”
“This is respect sport. This is not trash talking sport. I want to change this game. I don't want people talk s*** about opponents, talk s*** about his father, religion. You cannot talk about religion, nation, you cannot talk about this stuff. This for me is very important. I know my father is gonna smash me when I go home."
Prior to the apology, on FS1’s post-UFC 229 show, UFC president Dana White reacted to what happened.
“A lot of bad stuff that shouldn’t have happened,” said White, as transcribed by Simon Samano and Steven Marrocco for MMAjunkie. “All hell broke loose. I don’t even know what to say right now. I’m just disgusted and sick over it.”
“God knows what the [NAC] is going to do to Khabib and his guys. I think they’re fighters. Will they even get a visa again to get back in this country? There’s a lot of repercussions from what they did tonight, ones I don’t even think they realize yet.”
“They both made it very clear the rivalry would not be over after the fight. But I didn’t see Khabib jumping over the Octagon. I didn’t see that coming.”
