UFC fights we want to see in 2021: Cruz vs Edgar

We make history every day for the wrong reasons, as we dredge through the muck of this pandemic. The Ultimate Fighting Championship has got along just fine despite it all, so why not make some positive history and book a fight between a couple of legends of the mixed martial arts game? It’s why I demand the UFC make this fight in 2021 or we war!

UFC dream fight: Dominick Cruz vs. Frankie Edgar

If this fight doesn’t happen in 2021, Dana hates us all and could care less about MMA history. Personal exaggerations aside, I’ve been banging the drum for this fight to happen since Frankie Edgar’s decision to move down to bantamweight became a real thing. The former lightweight champion is one of the most respected fighters in UFC history. The man rose to stardom at 155-pounds and solidified his legend by becoming a two-time title challenger at featherweight.

On the flip side, Dominick Cruz is the best bantamweight of all-time, until further notice. I long hoped that maybe the two future Hall of Famers would meet somewhere in the middle at 145-pounds. Instead, “The Answer” generously came down to bantamweight for the first time in August, and put on a strong performance in his Split Decision win over ranked division stalwart Pedro Munhoz.

Both legends already have upcoming bookings against Cory Sandhagen [Edgar] and Casey Kenney [Cruz]. Both bouts could turn into a passing of the torch. With the New Jersey native turning 39 three months ago, and his Californian colleague an injury-riddled 35, the longer the UFC waits, the less worthwhile this fight becomes.

Who would win?

This is not a senior circuit booking like Fedor Emelianenko versus Frank Mir, or Chuck Liddell versus Wanderlei Silva. Edgar and Cruz are still damn good fighters despite being chronologically and physically long in the tooth. We have to see these two go at it for history’s sake people! The bout could be a technical masterpiece between two old dogs who’ve still got it. When the scrap does happen I’m riding with the older dog to squeak out the W.
