Strawweight champion Weili Zhang defends vs. Rose Namajunas in the main event of UFC 261 on April 24. On a recent episode of his Hotboxin' podcast, boxing legend Mike Tyson recently talked about the fight, and the challenger, with guest UFC president Dana White.
“But listen Rose is not going to be a walk-over," said Tyson. "Rose is not going to be a walk-over. So beautiful to be so vicious. So beautiful ... doll baby. ... She's going to eat your heart, destroy you."
Tyson's dialogue is a little hard to follow and was widely misconveyed. What Tyson actually said was that Namajunas looks like an easy fight, but isn't. What was reported by some media outlets was that Tyson said, "Thug Rose" was going to destroy the champion. Zhang heard the fake news, and was not impressed.
"Tyson has no right to comment because he knows nothing about MMA. He knows nothing about me," said Zhang to China Global Television Network Sports Scene reporter Wang Dong. "I will not be affected, but do my best instead, and I suggest Tyson try MMA himself."
"She has great footwork and boxing skills. I have prepared specifically for her skill set. I will check my arsenal and pick the suitable weapon to play against her. I know that anything could happen."
Zhang, 30, said China is a great market for UFC's overseas expansion and expressed her hope that more and more Chinese people will watch and try MMA. She said she would also like to see a TUF China in the near future. The champion was asked to speak directly to her fans.
"No matter what difficulties you encounter, you must overcome them instead of trying to escape them," she replied. "One's potential is limitless. We must stimulate it and chase our dream."
