Woodley submits Till to retain welterweight title
The main event of UFC 228 featured a welterweight title fight between champion Tyron Woodley and top contender Darren Till. Woodley had not fought since fourteen months back, but showed no ring rust in the fight winning the first round before finishing Till in the second.
Tyron Woodley made a statement Saturday night for everyone who has called him boring.
The UFC welterweight champion had perhaps his greatest performance to date in the main event of UFC 228, overwhelming Darren Till and finishing him with a D’Arce choke. The time of the stoppage at American Airlines Center in Dallas was 4:19 of the second round.
“There’s a lot of people who are hating against me,” Woodley said. “But there are a lot who are with me.”
Round 1 – Woodley loose to start, and Till advances in. Switch setp, and Woodley goes with right hands and a knee before fighting into the clinch. Till resists and stays up despite a trip takedown. Woodley has double underhooks, but Till’s grip and the cage are making it hard for a takedown. Miragliotta steps in quickly and separates them. Both men pawing with lead hands. Till slowly closing. Woodley explodes forward with a flurry. Till jabs in. Woodley ducking and feinting and then circles off. Miragliotta warns for an eyepoke. Woodley goes high with a kick that misses. Till waiting for his perfect opportunity. Past the midway point of the frame. Feint game as Till tries to time his straight left. Woodley swinging to get out of trouble. Woodley grabs a leg suddenly and muscles Till to the fence, and they’re in the same position. Foot stomps and knees from champ. Warning from Miragliotta. Woodley working for trip, then going with knees. Till turns Woodley with less than one minute, and Miragliotta separates them. Till inches back in, drawing counters from Woodley. Till’s left is blocked. Woodley trying that right hand. High kick blocked, and round ends. MMAjunkie scores the opening frame 10-9 for Woodley.
Round 2 – Till inches in and gets dropped by a right hand from Woodley. The champ is all over him, pounding away with right elbows. Till is still there. Till is turniing away, and Woodley has cut Till. More big shot. A big elbow slams Till’s head. Till’s lanky frame holding up Woodley, who’s caught his breath so as to no run out of gas. Champ picking his shots now, and returns to guard. Now, half-guard, and the elbows start. Till bleeding. Woodley working to pass, and Till scrambles to avoid being mounted. Till sitting up, and Woodley working elbows. Till avoiding the worst of it. Less than two minutes to go. Right hands from Till, who’s working to avoid them. D’arce setup from Woodley, and he’s going for it. And suddenly, Till taps. Tyron Woodley is still the champ. Till has his first loss.
