Art Vandelay's Pro Wrestling Ground Why is Undertaker so respected by the boys?

I never really understood the respect for the Undertaker from "the boys" backstage. In pretty much every wrestling book I've read there is a mention of how he was treated by his peers the same way as Andre The Giant. Even Bret and Shawn have nothing but good things to say about him in their books. But why? Besides making a silly gimmick work, has he done anything significant to earn that type of respect from the other wrestlers? Phone Post 3.0

I'm not his biggest fan, but he's one of the better big men of his era, has been a main-eventer for over 20 years, and has worked a pretty physical style for a guy his size.

He got his first WWF title shot within a year in the company and went undefeated that whole year. Prior to that, he wrestled as a midcarder for NWA/WCW and I don't recall him jobbing that often in those days either. So basically, good ol Taker wrestled the majority of his WWF career as a main eventer without really paying his dues to get that top spot. So again I ask, why does he get that much respect from the boys backstage? Phone Post 3.0

He worked to build other guys and not bury them. For a great example see the Jeff Hardy ladder match on RAW (2002?). If I remember correctly they built that up by Taker selling getting jumped by both Matt and Jeff.

He's a company guy first and foremost. If Vince came to him and asked him to end the streak to Hornswoggle for the better of the company he would do it without hesitation. Has never said a bad word about the company, will never do such a thing. Even if he's never lost at Mania he almost always puts his opponent over in the process. Never demanded the title nor needed the title to be a main eventer for over 20 years.

Simply put he keeps his trap shut when needed and praises all the right people in the lockerroom for example recently guys like the Shield and Daniel Bryan and Punk.

Well, even some people I know who knew him pre Undertaker described him as "super nice" and "gentle giant."

He may be a child molester behind closed doors, but he comes across as a genuinely nice, humble guy.

I'd say in a non union business that Taker is the boys closest thing to a Steward. An example I heard recently was during a Michaels title match,Undertaker sat in the back watching the monitor intently while getting his hands wrapped to basically beat the piss out of HBK if he didn't put( I wanna say) Austin over. He just makes sure the guys all respect the business and don't try to big time the new talent. He also probably takes a mid card wrestlers problem to higher ups so things get rolling. His stature is respected by both party's. What are you talking about?

He was only the unstoppable monster for a year or two. After gaining super popularity, he was a main eventer that always put EVERYONE over. Almost all of his gimmick matches, casket, buried alive, hell in the cell etc he's lost. He's been around twice as long yet has half the titles edge orton or cena has etc. He put everyone over all time. Which is why wrestlemania is his time to win. What happend with the shield where he got jumped and beat down. Same thing happened with vader, yokozuna, great khali, mark henry, cena, big show, kane, Michaels, austin, rock, hardy, mankind, maven, even mohammed hassan until wwe had to pull the plug. Some guys can take that push and run with it and some cant. Taker also is one of the few not to jump ship at the big contract and go to wcw like just about all of the "boys" at the time.

He's one of the nicest guys in the world too. Has no ego and always has the business in mind.

And whomever said he was one of the best big guys is wrong. I think he's the greatest big guy of all time. He doesn't move well for a big guy, he moves well period. His old school move, his patened flip over lariat. His signature suicide dive over the top rope. And he can sell amazingly, whether hes being beaten by jeff hardy or big show, you always believe it. Excerpt from Jenna Jameson's book:

Tony: Was that the night you met the Undertaker and he knew you from Las Vegas?

Jenna: Yeah, the Undertaker was one of the biggest WWF wrestlers at the time. He would put people in coffins and set them on fire in the ring. And the scary thing is, that character he played was not an act. Back when I used to hang out in Jack's shop and make needles for him, the Undertaker used to come in and get tattooed. I obviously never talked back then, because I was so shy. And he was very serious. So I met him that night dancing, and we hung out and became really good friends. And he told me that he took Jack aside one day and said, very serious, "I don't want your girlfriend to be here any more. I think she's a cop."

Tony: You were like sixteen years old and eighty pounds.

Jenna: Yeah, I never knew that he was the reason why Jack wouldn't let me hang out at the shop. The Undertaker said I'd sit there for six hours and never move or say a word. I guess I creeped everyone out. It's funny that the Undertaker was scared of me. He's probably the most psychotic man I've ever met in my life. He came to one of my dance gigs and this guy asked me, "Can I buy you a drink?" The Undertaker looked at him totally stone cold and said, "Yeah, you can get me a shot of Jaeger and you can get yourself a shot of shut-the-f----up." Phone Post 3.0

"Jordan was there at the time, and the Undertaker said, "I'm going to kick your boyfriend's ass and take you away with me." I knew he was serious. I ran upstairs and told Jordan we had to leave, because this guy was going to beat the f--- out of him and kidnap me. So I never saw him again. I think that was when Jordan forbid me to talk to any more guys on the road."

Yeah, sounds like a nice guy allright.. Phone Post 3.0

Taker was/is the peacemaker back stage. When guys especially established guys) had an issue. Taker tended to be the "mediator".

Back when the Kliq was running things. Taker actually formed BSK (Bone Street Krew) to protect (from backstage politics) the guys not in the Kliq or the Hart foundation. Some of the members were Yokozuna, Godfather, Savio Vega, Paul Bearer, Rikishi, Teddy Long & the Goodwins.

Heard many stories of him being a dick. Zack told me he walked up to him to try and be cool when he started and Taker told him to carry his bags.

Andre was also said to be a dick.

Is JBL well respected by the boys for being a dick too? Phone Post

i dont think rookie hazing = being a dick

Andre was a dick....to certain people. If he liked you, he was like a best friend.

JBL was an enforcer, so depending on what you did to who, i can see how he can be a perceived dick.

Hazing is and has been apart of the business for many many many many years. Everyone gets hazed, from Andre to Taker to Hogan. It's just the "boys" trying to have a good time. You're actually considered a dick if you don't go along with the hazing and get mad over it.

Unless you're like Orton who takes a shit in a divas gym bag.

Hazing is messing with people, pranks.  Being a dick and having a one legged kid carry your bags is just shitty.

Just because something has been done for years, doesn't make it right.

The problem I have seen with many people in life who are bigger than most is that they feel that since they are bigger, they can always get their way with people.

Taker is a just a dick.  Now his success is another story.  He came in as a badass character, so his rise to the top and decade of destruction make sense.  He really needed to go away like 8 years ago though.

Personally I think it's insane how he's stayed in character for almost 30 years when no one else really protects kayfabe anymore. Like Mick Foley said, I never want to see Undertaker on twitter.

Taker was never one of my favorite guys, but I respect the hell out if him. Phone Post 3.0

No he didn't need to go away like 8 years ago, just because you don't like him man. He may wrestle extremely rarely nowadays but his matches still steal the show. Phone Post

Sorry to name drop again......

I am telling you what Zack told me.  Everyone was cool...  A year after his release, Chris Benoit and Kurt Angle still sent him a Christmas card.

It wasn't just that story.  He said Taker was a dick.  Pretty fucked up you have a 20 year old kid with a fake leg carry your bags to "earn respect"

So Taker has earned the respect of people.  OK, he is a guy who is bigger than everyone, so of course they respect him.  Any stories about him being a good guy?

He has kept his character in WWE as in real life.  He gives a shit only about himself, always has, and always will....
