What an amazing book and horribly bad film.

I was stunned at what the author did with language in the book. Fucking brilliant and should have got the Booker Prize. I think it was short listed.

I didn't think the film was 'horribly bad', but yes, the novel was quite astonishing. The issue I have with it is that it is, and I think quite clearly so, just six short stories stuck together with tenuous links added afterwards to make it all 'make sense'. Whilst the novel as a whole is a great work, at no single point and in no single voice does Mitchell's prose really shine. He talks about being influenced by DeLillo, but has nothing of DeLillo's poetry in his own writing.

It's one of my favourite books without a doubt. David Mitchell is a pretty talented guy being able to write cross genre like that.

The Frobisher chapters were definitely my favourites.

Not caught the movie version yet, is it worth seeing?

^^^ If you've read the book it is definitely worth seeing. It's almost like a supplement to the book. I can't imagine how confusing it must be for people who haven't read the book.

That last line though, damn, "What is any ocean if not a multitude of drops." Still gives me shivers now remembering it.

I thought his use of language with on par with what that kid did with "Everything is Illuminated."

I am so jealous of that kid's talent that I won't even type his name.
