A new report suggests that a series based on Jaime Reyes/Blue Beetle may be in development at HBO Max.

According to Daniel Richtman, the streaming service is developing a series based on the DC Comics character. No other details were provided.

If the series goes forward, it would not be the first time Blue Beetle has graced viewers' television screens. Back in 2010, then-DC Entertainment Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns tweeted, "BLUE BEETLE NEWS from DCE!! We have a live-action test of Jaime Reyes' scarab activating his suit. It. Is. Awesome." While some thought this was referring to an independent series, the character only ended up appearing as a sidekick on Smallville.

On the animated side of the business, Blue Beetle has appeared in Batman: The Brave and the Bold, Young Justice, DC Superhero Girls and Justice League Action.

Blue Beetle could also be making his way to the big screen. Back in 2o18, reports started circulating that a film centered around the young hero was in development for the DCEU with a script from Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer. However, there have been no updates since then.

Introduced during 2006's Infinite Crisis, and created by writers Keith Giffen and John Rogers and artist Cully Hamnerthe, the Jaime Reyes incarnation of the Blue Beetle quickly developed a devoted fan following. The character has a wide range of superpowers thanks to an alien scarab embedded in his body.

If the series moves forward, it would be the third DC Comics drama to come from HBO Max. The streaming service is currently developing series based on Green Lantern and Strange Adventures.

I have seen Blue Beetle in a couple appearances in other titles/cartoons. I have to say I don't get the fascination with him. What am I missing?

Nothing as far as I know.

There was the original Blue Beetle, Ted Kord.  Best I can tell the most significant thing Ted did was get killed.

Then Young Justice introduced Jaime Reyes as the new Blue Beetle. The new Beetle powers come from an alien device..and that's about all I know. I have no idea if Jaime exists in DC comics or if he just exists in the Young Justice Universe.

I hear fans of the Blue Beetle on occasion and the character seems to have kind of a cult following. But I just never understood why.

Dan Garrett was the original Blue Beetle, FWIW.

Dan Garrett was the original Blue Beetle. Ted was the second. Ted was in the JLI [aka the BWA-ha-ha years of Giffen and Dematteis] Ted was a Charlton Comics creation [along with Capt. atom and Question]He's essentially Batman with a more sociable personality [atleast until they turned him into a useless comedy relief act]
