Popular anime streaming service Crunchyroll has entered into a new partnership with Webtoon that will see the development and production of new animated content and shows based on the latter's properties. Both companies will work together to distribute and license the shows, once completed.
“We are extremely excited to be partnering with Webtoon,” said Joanne Waage, general manager of Crunchyroll. “Webtoon has a tremendous catalogue of content and creators that resonate deeply with our audience and we can’t think of a better way to delight fans than by bringing these stories to life through animation.”
“There is tremendous crossover appeal with our audiences, and exceptional creative synergy on the types of stories we want to tell,” added Taylor Grant, svp of IP development at Webtoon. “We’re excited to partner with Crunchyroll to bring our globally appealing characters to audiences and consumers in new ways, as well as create new opportunities for our talented creators.”
Webtoon averages more than 55 million monthly active users, with a daily readership of approximately 15 million. Since its debut in the United States in 2014, the company has partnered with Legendary, Top Cow/Image Comics and Lucasfilm in providing content for its service.
Crunchyroll has 50 million users and two million subscribers to their service, which also offers manga that fans can read alongside anime and Asian Dramas. The company shared its intentions to create all-new content for its platform last year.
At the time of writing, there is no information available regarding initial series plans. Last week, it was announced that the Jim Henson Company is developing an animated series based on popular Webtoon series Lore Olympus, though it remains unknown whether that project is part of the new Crunchyroll deal.
