The CW is reportedly developing Valiant Comics' Dr. Mirage for the small screen.
Deadline reports the series is being developed by Reign co-creator Laurie McCarthy and marks the network's second attempt at developing the title. There was a report back in 2016 stating The CW previously ordered a pilot for the series, but a source close to the story reached out to CBR to deny it. Now, the project has seemingly moved far enough along to result in a completed script that McCarthy will tweak while adapting the project the second time around.
The Valiant Comics Twitter account confirmed the announcement while also providing a link for readers to download the first copy of The Death-Defying Dr. Mirage for free.
Although the 2016 report was rebuffed, Deadline goes on to say Dr. Mirage was previously in development for the 2016-2017 season with Annabelle's Gary Dauberman attached to pen the pilot. It's expected that McCarthy will use Dauberman's script while she re-develops the title. McCarthy is also set to executive produce the potential series alongside Dan Mintz, founder and CEO of DMG Entertainment and DMG’s Chris Cowles.
This marks a return to The CW for McCarthy, as she previously worked with the network on Reign, which ran for four seasons. Prior to that, she also worked on GCB for ABC and CBS' long-running Ghost Whisperer.
The character of Dr. Mirage was originally created by Bob Layton and Bernard Chang and made his first appearance in Shadowman #16 in 1993 before going on to lead his own title. The title was later given a modern revamp by Jen Van Meter and Robert de la Torre, entitled The Death-Defying Dr. Mirage, which follows the adventures of Shan Fong, a semi-retired paranormal investigator who can talk with the dead, but can't contact her own deceased husband. The potential television series is expected to be an adaption of the latter.
