fiznadd - I don't mind how many people have, if you can afford it, great...but why would a regular person need more than 1? Is it because people don't want to sell their old one when they upgrade?

Different calibers, barrel lengths, and setups for different purposes.

You mean like 1 for home defense, another for target shooting?

Thats one example. The AR is very versatile. You can have various calibers from .22-.50Beowulf. You can have 8"-20" barrels. You can have gas or piston driven. You can have various gas lengths.. The sky is the limit pretty much. I also enjoy buding clone rifles as a hobby.

I'm starting to go down the AR-build rabbit hole.

I initially told myself that I'd build one or two lowers and then get a bunch of uppers, but my online friends say to just build complete rifles.

Not sure which way to go...

I have a dozen or so, built all of them.

You could argue I went a little nuts. After I built a basic, simple carbine I decided I wanted a competition gun.  I was doing IDPA pistol matches at the time and thought I might try 3-gun.  So of course I needed a competition gun. Or two - you need a backup in case one breaks.

Then I found out about the MK12 - an accurized AR used by the military.  I like accuracy, so I built one inspired by that model.

Then I wanted other calibers - .300 blackout, 450 bushmaster, 9mm, 6.5 Creedmoor.

Then pistols became the rage, and 300 blackout was made for pistol length barrels, so . . .

To be honest, I enjoyed the process of planning and building them more than shooting them.

If I had access to a range where I could do 3-gun type stuff, I would like it a lot more.  But I do all my shooting at a range where you get assigned to a station, you can sit, stand, or shoot prone, but you can't move around, you only get one target to shoot at, so getting good groups is about the only challenge you can take on.  I like reloading, too, and chasing brass was not a lot of fun.

I've found for ordinary range shooting like that I prefer shooting bolt guns.  I'm thinking of selling off most of my ARs and buying a good bolt gun.

I just ordered a Howa 6mm creedmoore barreled action from brownells to build a starter long range bolt action.

The 6mm is a fucking laser beam and great option for ringing steel and punching paper 1000 plus yards.

On the short list of things I want in the near future. Great long range round external ballistics wise.

Also not something I would hesitate to hunt most things with. .243 caliber projectiles have downed a lot of deer and I wouldn't feel under gunned with one if it was sharing double duty.

Yeah thats what I"ve been reading. Seems to be good for hunting everything up to Elk, which the size is questionable for.

the legit mk18 clone is dope. Does it have the crane spec gas port too?

Correct.

I am thinking about ordering a 6MM ARC upper, although people make a strong case to go with the 6.5 Grendel if you want access to cheaper ammo options

invalid - until you stop enjoying them? I only own one but will probably build another. For me personally more than that I would feel bad not spending on something new that I didn't already have in the collection

Yes makes sense.

I started saying would only get something new if I got rid of something old.

But at that time the market/price for AR was really flooded and prices were down so I ended up keeping.

Beautiful collection. I guess you don't even need a valid reason to own all those beauties.

I didn’t realize there was such a thing as “too many”...

williepep - ARs,

How many are too many ?

At what point would you think it is wasteful ?

At what point would you feel silly ?

I get it a lot also depends on other carbines but I am not going to factor those in yet.

I am thinking one way to differentiate may be to get uppers in different calibers so you at least have the option to have a different caliber.

Never enough, I don’t own any but they look really cool. I was talking with a coworker who said it best. They are like LEGO’s, you can always add or take something away. Build one this way with these parts build another with this part instead of that part.

You will have enough when the possibility of tyranny no longer exists. Until then, stockpile all you can in preparation to defend yourself.

I can get an AR 15 pistol in 300 AAC, but I can't find ammo for it anywhere.

Still thinking of getting it and getting a 5.56 upper for it

If I may ask, roughly what did you spend on that glorious collection?

Just adding up some of it up in my head, including the clone correct stuff.... A fucking lot lol.

Just the rails/uppers and the optics and lights, not including the cans and the IR devices add up quickly lol.

First two ARs are $4500-$5k a piece. The HK is undoubtedly the most overpriced gun I own. Upper only was 3k.

A lot of interesting responses, I need to read through.

The flexibility and interchangeability a couple of posters have mentioned is correct.

It is something I did not realize or fully appreciate early on in the shopping process.

Had a I fully appreciated I would have started getting different uppers early on instead of a complete new AR.

Bottom is a MK12modH clone?

Muzzle brake a collar, plus the handguard look like it.

I kind of half-assed it.

Rubens is a  a Mk12 Mod1. The H usually has a 16" barrel and collapsible stock along with the mod0 handguard like yours.

No, a GUU5/P clone I put together. My absolute favorite KISS carbine of several I own. Air Force clones are cool because it doesn't matter the mishmash of components, it will be an accurate representation, lol.

i have had people say it looks like an IDF clone as well.

They are all likely 5.56 besides the shotgun. But he may have a .300 AAC in there somewhere
