Jimmy Johnson, by far...

His crew chief was a known cheater.

See what baj said above - Cars are SUPPOSE TO BE just about equal across the board. That means driver's skill comes in to play greatly, yes, but there's just so much random crap that can happen in a 200-300-400-500-600 mile race. Jimmy won WAY MORE than any supposed skill advantage should have given him.

His cars were tweeked, contrary to the rules of the sport, and that's what accounted for his team being consistently faster EVERY WEEK.

No one can convince me otherwise.

You do realize the type of inspections done on the cars pre and post race right?

Every inch of the car is dissected.

And you can bet with his crew chiefs history his cars were looked into even more thoroughly.

Personally I would like to say Dale Sr. but you can't deny what Jimmie accomplished in a ten year period.

Gordon

Kyle Busch

Earnhardt Sr.

Johnson

In that order

When you go too far back, the car meant way more than the driver. Earnhardt did well enough in the 90's to prove he was legit even when the cars were equal. He was even good in the iroc series.

My wife cried like a child when Dale Sr. died. It was like we lost a family friend.

Jimmy Johnson.  It's not even debatable.  The wins and championships he amassed against the competition he faced is unparalleled in NASCAR.  It's often forgotten or overlooked that for much of NASCAR's history there was little if any parity.  Most years had less than a handful of legitimate contenders.  Jimmy's career has been spent racing against a third of NASCAR's all time race winners.

How can you say sr as best pure driver? Part of his allure is being rough around the edges. Stole a couple from some dudes that were arguably the better driver that day. This isn't a sleight at him being great either, he was

Earnhardt was a boss and could have competed in any era, he was an asshole at times but you can't argue with his skill and determination.

There is so much that goes into the setup of a racecar. From transmission and rear end gear ratios to shock and spring ratios to weight distribution and geometry. The cars are not setup exactly the same thats why they have crew chiefs and engineers working on these cars .just because he was dominant doesn't mean he was cheating

I have a super rare NASCAR collectible I've been hanging on to for years. It's a 1:24 Die Cast car, Ward Burton 22, and it is a chase variant with a piece of his firesuit AND a piece of the steel from his car. 1 of 50. I thought it would be valuable but there's no market for it. Maybe Trump will Make NASCAR Great Again and I can finally get rid of it. Trump is M'NGA!

Not sure who the best is/was but my all time favorite was definitely Gordon. My parents were huge Dale Sr. fans.
