What band got the most popular with little to no old fashioned terrestrial radio support?

I gotta think a band like Slayer is pretty high on that list.

I am sure there are many more, so what say you?

Grateful Dead?  Don’t get much bigger and had very little commercial air play.

I never hear Iron Maiden on the radio here. I think their tunes are just too long usually.

Absolutely. It's also crazy how juggalos are arguably the largest true counterculture that hasn't been co-opted by the corporate world. I'm not sure anything else comes close.

Some of those obscure synth pop / edm artists get hundreds of millions of hits on youtube and spotify with no radio play.

Maiden.  You can buy lawn tickets day of a slayer concert.  Good luck on getting maiden tickets 3 months before the show

What third world hell holes do you guys live in, or just too young to remember the 80s? I live in the damn Bible Belt and The Trooper and Can I Play With Madness were radio staples. Slayer was mainly reserved for college stations and the rock station's late night metal show but got radio play.

SoCal.   You MIGHT hear the Trooper late at night on some hard rock station.

you will rarely hear a slayer song, but they don’t pack large venues the way Maiden does.

Sturgill Simpson won a Grammy for an album that didn't get a single play on pop country radio that year.

Some of the biggest ones have been mentioned, and these are groups who were making a name for themselves when terrestrial radio support was far more relevant than today.

Slayer has 4x RIAA Gold albums

Insane Clown Posse has 2x RIAA Gold, 2x RIAA Platinum

Phish has 6x RIAA Gold, 1x RIAA Platinum

Greatful Dead has 9x RIAA Gold, 1 RIAA Platinum, 3 RIAA 2xPlatinum

Iron Maiden had very little radio exposure in the 1980's. Name a better collection of concert t-shirts and a bigger than life mascot that was part of every show. Master marketers. They have been global juggernauts since the early 80's.

Nofx isn’t in the conversation. Not even close.
