Saw threads on the OG when this show came about.

I had zero interest in watching the show was not even sure what it would be but just expected it to be complete nonsense ( and not in a good way).

Turned on Netflix tonight it seemed like the show just started and somehow I became hooked.

It is a funny show, enjoy watching it especially the dynamic with the Billy Zabka character.

Even without out any of the movie references or tie ins just a funny show.

Making a thread and mentioning in case any other OGers like myself decided not to give the show a chance.

Completely not what I expected when I first heard of the show and saw it mentioned on the OG.

The OG usually has great TV recommendations.

Is it a comedy or a drama? Is it making fun of the Karate Kid, or a true extension of the story. I could never tell by the previews. It looked like it was totally mocking the movies, but with the same actors. Is it authentic in that way, or just bullshit.

It has comedic moments but it is expanding on the story from the movies. It's pretty reverent of the source material,  IMO. I'm only about 6 episodes in but enjoying it so far.

It definitely starts as comedy but the drama builds up. I'd say the second season is darker in tone than the first. There's plenty of references to the movies and at times, it seems a little self mocking. For me, the best part about it is that you see a lot of events from Johnny Lawrence's perspective. He was kind of a generic bad guy in Karate Kid and now he's a very nuanced character.

Only criticism is it needs to be 90/10 in the Johnny and Daniel screentime. Its almost 50-50.

I'm enjoying the hell out of it after two episodes. It's self-aware, turns the 80s cheese up a notch, and is perfect. Exactly the kind of show I needed in 2020 haha

Thanks for reminding me. I didn't want to pay extra for it at the time, so the move to Netflix helps.

6 episodes in, really enjoying it, not as cheesy as some seem to suggest. Seems if Macchio left they could also take it in a new direction too as they’ve fleshed out Johnny as a really good character

Season 2 was impossible to watch. Disappointing as I really liked season 1. Just so cringe.

Zabka is the show. Larusso is a dud really. I liked when Daniel went for a test drive and they ended up getting drinks. Made fun of Allies new husband etc.

My kids friggin love the show

Should have ended after season 1.

People looking for 80s nostalgia arent going to be interested in a modern day high school romance drama.

Kids love the show. A ton of them never even saw or heard of KK.

I think season 1 was just more self contained because they didn't know if the show had legs on youtube.

Once it became a hit, then they slowed things down.

I enjoy it independent of KK references.

Nostalgia or references to KK are not what make me laugh.

Zabka character and the dynamics between underdog kids.

Always a nice formula the not fully utilized potential or character with "glory days" have passed them by helping the underdog kids improve.

Awesome show! I really hope season 3 gets back to zabka doing and saying zabka things. I'm all about character progression but him being rough around the edges in a sincere way is what made the first season so awesome.

When he discovers the internet and sees a picture that says "dinosaurs built the pyramids" he goes "i knew it" lol!
