Btw, to be clear,  I'm not making an argument that the SEC isn't a good conference.   I'm talking defense specifically.

I'm also not saying Alabama and Georgia defenses are somehow overrated.   They are not.  Lsu, Auburn and you could argue A&M regularly produce the some of the best defenses every year.

My point is that after that, its average at best after that.

I hear you but you just listed 5 teams before a drop off. And you forgot Florida and arguably USCe.They are above average defenses too, more often than not. That is nearly half the conference. And last year Kentucky had a pretty darn good defense too.

Sure, some of that goes to the offenses they play against. But there are a few teams with top level offenses in the SEC these days too.

Wake looking pretty good so far against the Tarholes in a weird ACC non-conference matchup.

Forgot about ACC, but Clemson and Syracuse maybe? North Carolina?

I'm going to say not North Carolina.

Speaking of defense,  has anyone noticed Georgia has gone to that weird hybrid 3-3-5.  It's close to the version Oklahoma is trying to run.

3 man front.

Will/Sam/Mike but Sam shortside not strong side and Will is wideside not weak side.  The have a strong and free safety, 2 corners and an Xback, who is kind of an LB/SS.  More of a DB than a LB.

Bama and Clemson both play prostyle defenses.  They have the talent, but so does Georgia but they have opted for the more fashionable college style that's designed to stop the spread and RPO.

Elko likes using a rover (hybrid LB/S). I think you'll start to see a lot more of these weird schemes with the direction the offenses are going. Clemson used it on A&M as well.

Saying the acc is weak really isn't a good arguement at all, the acc has had a winning record head to head against the sec for several years in a row

I thought this UH vs Wazzou game would be a shootout. Not so far though.

remove Clemson from the equation and that changes

Clemson is elite. The rest of the ACC is pretty fucking terrible.

and the ACC was a lot better just a few years ago. FSU and Louisville were good teams. GaTech seemed to be pretty good every 34rd or 4th year

But the conference has just fallen off a cliff the last couple of seasons it seems

Kansas with the won over Boston College tonight. Going in to this they had lost 48 straight road games against P5 teams. The streak is over.

Leach is going to somehow get Wazzu to another 8 or 9 win season. One of the more underrated HCs in CFB.

I still think it's funny Tennessee could have had him before the Fulmer coup d'état.

Their AD was in the air to meet Leach, who absolutely would have jumped on the job, but he gets fired before the plane lands. Fulmer goes a complete different direction, and the next thing you know it's glory for Georgia State.

Fulmer is a strange story.  He stabs Johnny Majors in the back and gets his job.  Has great success,  then overstays his success as the program declines.   Some people don't want anyone successful to follow them.  Remember how bitter RC Slocum was after his coaching?

Yes please explain the RC thing to me. I'll ask him the deets on the driving range in about 30 minutes.
