Alright let's talk putting it together. Do I need to purchase a specific gunsmithing set or any special tools? Like a barrel nut wrench?

The reaction rod will be good for all AR15 builds/ work you decide to do. So not a bad investment

That's actually pretty cool, I like that.

On a different note. What do you think about a club logo or shirt?

I think I should buy a gray name before making these available. And to keep things fun I'll be giving away exclusive items here, like the logo on a Champion hoodie, jacket, beanie, or whatever. Much thanks to everyone for the lessons and suggestions.

@Serge, I can probably make you your own AK logo -- congratulations again on your pops kicking cancer's ass, rooting for him and your family.

Tshirt looks good but the logo unfortunately looks too much like the OG 666 Riders Motorcycle Club colors. Better to start over than have the shirts burned off you if caught wearing in public.

FWIW, I would have bought the complete gun if I was rich. I think this project is fun because you can go as slow as you want, maybe attaining some of the great stuff on sale, or 1 rare piece at a time. The lower at Brownells is available for $199.99. I assumed it would be frustrating when I couldn't get a specific part I wanted, but it's still been fun as there are other parts that pop up here and there.

PS: I might also get that 22lr

This.  Its the thrill of the chase.  The process of chasing/ hunting rare unique parts is alot of the fun.  One piece at a time.  The HK416 22lr is on my wish list.  I kick myself every day for not getting the pistol for 359 at cdnn.

Ours has been super reliable. It is surprisingly sturdy and heavy, almost feels over-built.

^^ looks good!

Here's an update from the letter I sent to ATF:

"This is in reply to your recent email to the Firearms Industry Programs Branch (FIPB) Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) asking about the lawfulness of importing HK Model 416 component parts from Germany.

An approved import permit ATF Form 6, Application and Permit for Importation of Firearms, Ammunition and Implements of War, is required to import firearms parts into the
United States and allows the importation of the articles listed on the form. A permit is valid for one year from its approved date.

An unlicensed person may obtain a permit to import sporting ammunition (excluding armor-piercing, tracer, or incendiary ammunition) and firearm parts (other than frames,
receivers, firearm barrels, or barreled actions) without engaging the services of an FFL, provided the items are for personal use and not for resale. Generally, ATF cannot issue a
permit authorizing the importation of firearms barrels for nonsporting or surplus military firearms.

Be advised that the importation of certain firearms parts and related items is prohibited.

To insure the part or parts you wish to obtain are importable and for more information in general you should contact our Imports Branch directly.
