A "Bathing Machine". If people were shy about walking from the changing room down to the beach in these (very revealing) vathing suits, you could get in a bathing machine which would be winched down into the ocean, from which you could then exit into the water.

Gilbert and Sullivan referenced them.

I just think old mugshots are interesting.

Mug Shot from News Castle, PA Police Department: Edward Kozol was 17 in January, 1937, when he was arrested for stealing scrap iron and given a short sentence in the county jail. He was 23 when he was killed in an ambush in Normandy, a month after he took part in the D-day landings.

During this station of a Ku Klux Klan initiation, the blindfolded candidate is guided to stand on a chair as a noose is placed upon his neck and tightened. The person is then asked if he/she trusts the noose-man and is instructed to step off the chair in an act of faith. Throughout the rituals, proposed Klansmen/Klanswomen are blindfolded, and then with one arm placed on the shoulder of the person before them, they are led through the woods at a sometimes-vigorous pace. The link is not to be broken as they are questioned on Klan history and intimidated occasionally with the sound of a firearm.

Jimmy Pasta was arrested in March, 1940, for running illegal lotteries. A few months later, he was hailed as a hero for disarming a violent bank robber and using the gun to shoot him dead.

And what a great name.
